Robert Gill was educated at the University of Sydney (Science and Electrical Engineering) and at Stanford University (PhD). After graduating, he returned to Australia and joined the Ultrasonics Institute in Sydney, a renowned scientific research organisation which made many pioneering contributions to the development of ultrasound technology.
His primary role was to research and develop advanced Doppler techniques. He has published over 70 scientific publications and book chapters, and 150 conference papers on his research and authored 4 international patents.
He developed new techniques for the measurement of blood flow and collaborated with clinicians to explore applications. Of particular note was his path-breaking work on the measurement of fetal blood flow with Dr William Garrett and his colleagues at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney.
Dr Gill has been active in professional societies. He has been closely involved with the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) over many years, serving as President, Treasurer, Councillor, Newsletter Editor and conference and workshop convenor. He has been a member of the Board of Examiners for the ASUM Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU) since 2009. He represented Australia on the Council of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB), and was a member of the editorial boards of several international journals.
In 1989 the Ultrasonics Institute was transferred to CSIRO (the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia’s premier research organisation). Dr Gill moved from research to management and was the Deputy Chief of the CSIRO Division of Physics when he retired in 2005.
He has always enjoyed teaching and has been involved in postgraduate education throughout his working life. He has taught in courses for the University of Sydney, Queensland University of Technology, Western Sydney University, Yale University, ASUM, ASA (the Australian Sonographers Association), ASMI (the Australian School of Medical Imaging), AIHE (Australian Institute of Healthcare Education), HETI (NSW Health’s Health Education and Training Institute) and RANZCR (the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists).
He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of NSW School of Medicine. Since retirement, teaching has become a major activity, leading to the writing of this book.

High Frequency Publishing (ABN: 27 661 233 651) was established by Dr Robert Gill in 2012 to publish his textbook The Physics and Technology of Diagnostic Ultrasound: A Practitioner's Guide.
Subsequently the company's activities have expanded to include the publication of additional books and providing online resources and training for practitioners (under the banner Sonophys eLearning).
Both High Frequency Publishing and Sonophys eLearning are located in Sydney, Australia.
